Common medications for social anxiety disorder are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). FDA-approved SSRIs and SNRIs include: Sertraline (Zoloft) Paroxetine (Paxil) Venlafaxine (Effexor)

Common SSRIs used to treat social anxiety disorder include fluoxetine (Prozac®), (Zoloft®),, citalopram and escitalopram. SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors): SNRIs are another type of antidepressant. or duloxetine (Cymbalta®) are common SNRIs used to treat social anxiety disorder.

Your health care provider may prescribe paroxetine (Paxil) or sertraline (Zoloft). The serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) venlafaxine (Effexor XR) also may be an option for social anxiety disorder.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are first-choice options for treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). If an SSRI or SNRI doesn’t work, there are other options. These include buspirone and hydroxyzine.
