The Street Fighter movie was originally lined up to release on March 20, 2026, but now it's completely off Sony's calendar. It's a somewhat unexpected move, as a new director, Kitao Sakurai, just came aboard in late February, replacing the previous co-directors, the Philippou brothers.

Sony's Street Fighter movie has been pulled from the studio's release schedule, dashing hopes for the long-gestating adaptation. As part of the same shake-up, Tommy Wirkola's new shark thriller 'Beneath the Storm' (now retitled 'Shiver') has been pushed back to July 2026 from August 2025, Variety reports.

All may well not be lost though - we'll have to stay tuned to see if it gets re-scheduled down the line.

Hell, even with many properties being taken more “seriously” there are still the occasional duds (I actually didn’t care much for the 2021 Mortal Kombat flick, but I also recall watching it at ten AM on a Saturday in between the feedings and naps of my then-months-old twin children).

While the prevailing consensus about the Street Fighter film franchise's legacy is that the live-action movies didn't work, the animated movies are a different story. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is probably the best version of this narrative ever to reach the screen.
