Newly minted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has panned the idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state amid tensions about a an all-out trade war between the neighboring nations.

On the sunlit porch of a farmhouse in the Canadian province of Alberta, Don Casselman planted his feet, gripped a laminated document and began to read aloud.

Canada’s new leader, Mark Carney, rebuked the Trump administration’s vision to make his country the 51st U.S. state. During some of his first public remarks as Canada’s prime minister, Carney made it a point on Friday to knock President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their comments regarding his country.
