India has ordered Samsung and its executives in the country to pay $601 million in back taxes and penalties for dodging tariffs on import of key telecoms equipment, a government order showed, for one of the biggest such demands in recent years.

South Korean conglomerate Samsung has been slapped with a whopping $601 million (or INR 5,515 crore) tax notice by the Government of India. The company allegedly dodged tariffs on telecom imports on critical equipment. The order can be challenged by the tech giant in court or a tax tribunal.

The massive tax demand, which could significantly impact Samsung’s bottom line, represents a large portion of the company’s $955 million (around Rs. 8,183 crore) net profit in India last year. The company now faces a battle to challenge the order in a tax tribunal or the courts.
