Google Maps users have recently been complaining on places like Reddit that their Timeline data — the app’s historical record of where they’ve been — had disappeared. Now, Google has confirmed to Android Authority that it accidentally deleted the data and that anyone who wasn’t using Google’s cloud backups is out of luck.

Users began reporting earlier this month that their Timeline data was gone, and Google has now confirmed it was deleted for some.

In a recent update to Google Maps, users were given the option to store their location history either locally on their devices or on an encrypted cloud backup. However, earlier this month, some Google Maps users reported that their timeline data had mysteriously vanished,

Google has confirmed the recent loss of Timeline data from the Maps app due to technical issues. Thankfully, users will be able to get the data back, provided they have backed it up beforehand. Unaffected users are encouraged to enable backups for Timeline history in the Google Maps app to prevent loss of data.
