Superficial folliculitis is an inflammation of the upper section of the hair follicle, and may be caused by an injury to the follicle, by infection, or by a chemical irritation of the follicle.
They most commonly affect the scalp and rarely the beard. The primary differential diagnosis of any bacterial folliculitis is deep trichomycosis, which clinically may look exactly alike.
