Beneath Sforza Castle in Milan, researchers have discovered a series of secret tunnels—passageways once sketched by the Renaissance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci and traversed by a widower sick with grief.

After Ludovico il Moro took over as Duke of Milan in 1494, he had many artists come to Sforza Castle to decorate its rooms with frescoes, including Leonardo da Vinci. In later years, da Vinci's sketches suggested the existence of secret passageways beneath the castle that quickly became the stuff of legend and have fascinated historians ever since.
