Microsoft is rolling out a new gamepad keyboard for Windows 11 that lets you type with an Xbox controller. It improves the on-screen keyboard in Windows 11 making it a lot easier to navigate with an Xbox controller and type into text fields throughout the operating system.

There is something so incredibly frustrating about typing on a digital keyboard with a controller. Whether for streaming or gaming, the slowness with which you often have to find each letter is just painful.

Typing with an Xbox controller on Windows 11--especially handheld devices--should become easier with a new update rolling out. That's because Microsoft is bringing controller functionality found on Xbox Series X|S for keyboards to Windows 11.

The Gamepad keyboard layout has been in testing for some time, but has now arrived at the final channel (Release Preview), so should be imminent.
