Episode 16 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea began at 10:57 p.m. HST on Monday, March 31 with the start of lava overflowing from the north vent.

The ongoing eruption at Kīlauea’s Halemaʻumaʻu crater entered its 16th episode late Monday night. Lava began overflowing from the north vent at 10:57 p.m., following a period of spattering that began earlier in the day.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the lava geysers were preceded by more than 100 cycles of lava rise and fall, vent overflows and spatter fountains in the north vent, a phenomenon known as “gas pistoning,” which has been observed in other Kīlauea eruptions during recent decades.
